*COURSE OUTLINE (for ongoing independent art workshop)

Media and Techniques

• Collage
• Drawing
• Painting with acrylics
• Painting with oils
• Above media are taught both individually and in conjunction with one another.

Stages and progression of class

• Classes are offered in six twice-weekly sessions, taught in the environment of my studio, students often sign up repeatedly for these.

• Whenever new students come to class a series of demonstrations are given. Collage is made on blank surface (it is emphasized that all of these processes can be used both two and three dimensionally). Drawing and acrylic painting is done on a surface that is collaged. Oil painting is demonstrated on a work that has already been collaged, drawn upon and painted with acrylics.

• During demonstration and the duration of class, careful explanation of materials and effects and consequences of the mixing of these materials is given.

• Philosophy of art discussion (and related topics) is facilitated and encouraged, sometimes as planned lessons, sometimes spontaneously.

• An attitude of questioning and experimentation on the part of the student is fostered.

Other teaching methods include:

• Occasional work on my own projects as further example.
• Field trips to other artists' studios, museums, and galleries.
• Exposure of students to slides, reproductions, books, etc.
• "Materials foraging expeditions" to neighborhood surrounding studio, local dumpster, flea market, thrift stores, etc.
